SANTA BARBARA / HOME

We woke up to the Californian sunshine and packed suitcases – oh dear, time to go home.

Sheila drove us from LAX when we arrived and had the honour of the final drive back to the airport.  Sharing the driving was great, front seat passenger helped navigate and back seat took the photos.  We rotated daily.

This is an unusual sight, there are very very few roundabouts.  Sue loved driving at them shouting,    ‘I yield, I yield’ as she flew round.

They have some different road rules to us which take some getting used to.  Turning right at a red light feels odd but if you don’t do it you’re quickly reminded by the driver behind.  Trouble is it’s not an ‘all the time rule’. It changes depending on which state you’re in.

This, if you look closely, is a TV screen fixed on the pump. You can watch and listen, it blasts out, as you fill up.

We didn’t do a lot of shopping, too much else to look for but we always got the obligatory fridge magnet.  The collection is up to 15 so we’re probably going to need a bigger fridge!

There are many signs like these and on the whole we would say we saw very little rubbish in the country,  towns or along the sides of the freeway.

There are many huge signs on entry points to the freeway which seem a bit unnecessary but unlike our motorways the roads have numerous exits and entrances, some come up quickly and with little warning and it is easy to go down the wrong one if you’re not concentrating.

This one does bring home exactly what the hazards of this country can be along with the minor ones like the rattle snakes.

Then there are the reminders that they have some phenomenal wildlife but they also count on public funds to help protect it.

Last few hands of cards at LAX and the call has come to board.

Last view and a goodbye to LA.

Just been offered a sleep suit.  We’ve all said no, they may be useful but not a good look as you walk back to your seat, from the loo, modelling it.

As we take off over LA it’s 10 hours of food, movies and, hopefully sleep. The time difference may be about to cause havoc with our sleep patterns but, hey ho, it’ll all catch up with a few cat naps.

Well we’ve made it home and we counted 3 cases out and we’ve counted them back in again.

The time has come to wrap things up and we’ve realised we never got round to telling you about OAP’s V the Parking Meter.  Suffice to say we won but it was a battle with several rounds.

We have had over 3000 views of the blog and, coincidentally, driven nearly 3000 miles, and we hope you’ve enjoyed  our OAP Road Trip.  We’ve had a blast and not a cross word.  Some things vexed us, many amused us and we all have huge photo rolls that we just had no room for on the blog.  (There are, of course, some things that happened on the road trip and will stay on the road trip! ). Our memories will hold such special times –  thank you for sharing them with us.

Janice, Sheila and Sue – Over and Out.  xx
