As we begin our homeward leg we have given ourselves 2 night stays so we can begin to calm down.  So after the shenanigans of yesterday it was good to have a whole day and night in front of us (and a working car).

After breakfast at the hotel we set off for the 17 Mile Drive. Apologies that this may turn into a bit of a travelogue again.  This drive begins in Monterey

One of the most scenic drives in the world.

Each point of interest was breathtaking.  The  Restless Sea, a turbulent area where waves constantly converge and crash into each other.  Then the wildlife, Bird Rock, Seal Rock and the appearance of a Rock Squirrel, keen to pose.

Monterey Cypresses are also famous and there are only 2 such forests in the world.  The Lone Cypress has for 250 years grown on a rocky outcrop, braving the elements overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  For the golfers amongst you we visited  Pebble Beach Golf Links where 6 US Open Tournaments have been held.  It’s $600 to play a round and we didn’t have time anyway.

Photo dump starts now!

Leaving this stunning place and a little disappointed we didn’t bump into Clint Eastwood, we set off to Cannery Row.  Made famous by John Steinbeck his book told the story of  the exploits of a group of bums in Cannery Row.  Now, what was an area dependent on  sardine fishing and canning is now an eclectic selection of shops, restaurants and attractions.

John Steinbeck 1902 – 1968

One of the great pleasures of this trip has been the different restaurants and excellent meals we’ve enjoyed. (Heaven help our waistlines).  However, today at the Fish Hopper, a restaurant built out into the sea, Sheila failed to  share the enthusiasm of Janice and Sue when they tucked into their Chowder Bread Bowls

It was a slow stagger after that back to the car and back to Carmel. Of course we only have ourselves to blame regarding the problem with expending waistlines as even after a large  lunch we went out for dinner. A lovely Greek place, it came recommended for its food and ambience. The ambience turned out to be a chap playing a Bouzouki and next minute Sue, encouraged by a waiter, (didn’t take a lot of persuasion), was cavorting round the room.  Sheila joined her as Janice maintained her dignity and remained glued to her chair.

We’re back on the road tomorrow and the forecast is good so the shorts are coming out – hopefully they’ll fit……..
