GRAND CANYON

Yesterday we drove through quite unexpected terrain and weather. We had rain, sleet, snow, thunder and hail.  It was a Sue driving day and she really earned her stripes! Scenery was, of course, quite stunning.

On our way to the site of the world’s biggest meteor crater we went through Sedona. The red rock buttes were stunning.

Then we got to the Barringer Crater. Created 50,000 years ago with a force of greater than 20 million tons of TNT. It’s a mile across and 550 feet deep. The museum, also on site, was full of info about meteors, NASA  and a who’s who in the night sky.

We didn’t observe from outside for too long as the rain was falling in sheets and joined by some threatening thunder ( it was only 5° too!).

However, back on the road and another couple of hours, some covered on the iconic Route 66, to the Grand Canyon National Park.  Well if we thought the crater was an impressive hole in the ground, boy were our minds changed when we looked over the South rim of the Grand Canyon!! It takes your breath away.

We caught it just as the sun began to set. Words are hard to find – it is truly spectacular.  Our hotel El Tovar was built for travellers on the newly constructed Santa Fe railway  in 1905 and we finished the day with a warming chilli.  Blue sky but chilly outside so we’re off to find warmer climes in Las Vegas via the Hoover Dam.

Spectacular apple streusel – heaven help our waistlines!!!
